Kindling
App Design - UX/UI Project 2023
A fictional project for the Masters of Design program at UNSW.

Created for Kindling (fictional), a company aimed at Aboriginal high school children of the Wreck Bay Village community, situated on Yuin Country. Located on the South Coast of NSW, Australia.

Kindling aims to bring traditional Aboriginal fire management practices of cultural burning into teaching and learning for the adolescents of Wreck Bay. Achieved through an app and an educational system which compliment and coexist together. Seeking to teach the practice of cultural burning through a hands on approach, learning on Country and then enhanced through the use of an app as a resource.

Looking to bring back traditional, cultural practices as a means of fire management and reduction. As Cultural burning both cares for Country and the community but is largely disregarded by the western society and practices we have chosen to adopt and apply. Hoping to reduce the catastrophic destruction faced by all in the ‘unprecedented bushfire’ seasons we continue to face.

Kindling is a co-design approach which is facilitated, designed and taught alongside Firesticks (leading practitioners of cultural burning in Australia) and the local community. The app will create a data base of knowledge and evidence on the land and the practice of cultural burning, highlighting the benefits.
